Specimen Handling
To assure proper identification and appropriate testing on all samples, MSI offers the following guidelines for specimen handling:
- All samples should be labeled with a unique identifier (e.g., initials or number).
- A complete inventory sheet should be included in each shipment to allow for comparison of samples received to samples sent. This sheet would contain the same unique identifier found on the samples.
- An accompanying note should identify the investigator, institution, protocol number, analyses required and the contact information of the sender.
- MSI should be made aware if any dose samples are being sent by separate shipment.
- MSI should be contacted by email to inform us as to when the samples will be arriving.
Additional guidelines for samples requiring DRY ICE shipment
- Samples should be provided in cryogenic vials (Corning No. 430659 or equivalent) and placed in plastic sealable bags to assure sample integrity.
- D2O or 18O dose vials do NOT require freezing and MUST BE SENT SEPARATELY from the samples to avoid isotopic contamination. US mail can be used for sending dose vials.
- The plastic bags containing sample vials must be boxed and packed with sufficient DRY ICE to keep all samples frozen until arrival at MSI. If dry ice is not available, do not use conventional ice or ice packs (H2O) since moisture contamination may take place.
- All sample shipments should take place by overnight delivery service.
